Rod Friend

A well established British stained glass artist working both in Andalucia (Southern Spain) and in Stroud (UK) with 30 years’ experience of designing and making stained glass windows.
Since leaving the Royal College of Art Rod has been producing architectural stained glass (mostly painted, leaded glass work) for public and private buildings. 90% of all Rod’s work is commissioned and can be seen in many villages and towns in and around Gloucestershire and the neighbouring counties.
Rod’s new studio, opened in the South of Spain in 2007, is he says ‘an inspiring place in a mountain olive grove that is slowly becoming a fruit and flower garden.’ Although living full time in Spain, Rod retains a British studio. Sadly, he has recently moved from his stunningly beautifully secluded barn studio on the outskirts of Edge (outside Stroud) to a new studio near Painswick.
Rod says that stained glass is an art form that enhances architecture as jewellery does a human. It occupies a unique place in art, making use of transmitted light rather than of light reflected from a surface. ‘Stained glass’ he says, ‘is about light shining through transparent material, projecting colour into the spaces that humans create.’
Rod can be contacted for commissioning work, or for enquiries about his stained glass courses through Baroque Glass on our contact form.
