PMC (Precious Metal Clay) : Jewellery Making
Normally just referred to by its initials, precious metal clay is a relatively new product produced by Mitsubishi. It’s a peculiarly odd substance which I think looks a bit like icing sugar after the kids have played with i.e. a dirty grey colour! It’s hard to believe that after firing this amazing substance turns into 99.8% pure silver which can be sent off for assaying if the item made goes up for sale.
The clay is relatively simple to use as long as you remember that a) it’s approximately £1 per gram and therefore quite expensive and b) a very little goes a long way.
There is a slight draw back to this amazing material in that once opened the packs must be kept airtight otherwise the clay does go hard. PMC is sold in small and large packs as well as in syringes so it’s very versatile.
For those students who would like to learn more about this substance there is a PMC Guild which will help you find suppliers and will also answer any questions you have about the product.
